A Winter Wonderland

A Winter Wonderland - The Highlands
The winter of 2009/10 was in a completely different league to anything I have witnessed in my lifetime. In the Highlands temperatures never rose above zero for over 3 months. All the high-level lochs, streams and even a lot of the rivers froze and disappeared under a blanket of snow. It really was transformed into an arctic wilderness.

This is Lochan na h-Achlaise on Rannoch Moor. I don’t know how thick the ice was but before walking out onto it a chopped out a hole 18” deep with my ice axe and there was no sign of water at that depth!
