Locations & Date Ideas
I've introduced this page to offer some seasonal ideas for workshops/tuition. It's by no means the full list of locations I can offer, it's just meant to offer inspiration and ideas. If you have another location in mind give me a call or drop me a line and as long as I know it intimately I'll be happy to organise a day there. I'll try to update the page regularly throughout the year
- The Heather is flowering in the North Yorkshire Moors and will look stunning until mid September. I've got loads of locations scoped out for myself but am happy to share these with anybody that's interested. Particular favourites at the moment are the areas around Roseberry Topping & Captain Cook's monuments. Autumn won't be far behind either with it's lovely golden bracken and the first frosts...
- Saltburn is a favourite venue of mine throughout the summer and autumn. At dusk the sun runs down the length of the beach illuminating Hunt Cliff with beautiful reds & oranges, silhouetting the pier and painting the wet sand with light. I just can't get enough of the place at this time of year!
- Saltwick Bay is a stunning and very diverse dawn and dusk venue all year round. Obviously there is the famous wreck of the Admiral Van Tromp and Black Nab but this location has so much more to offer, with a beautiful sandy beach and an amazing wave cut platform littered with countless boulders of all shapes and sizes, all backed by imposing towering cliffs.
- Whitby is great all year round, it is however very busy, especially in the summer so I normally combine it with Saltwick Bay or Sandsend where there's more space to concentrate on tuition without distractions, heading to Whitby, which is only one mile away for sunset.
- Derwent Water & Buttermere are both great locations in the Lake District. Both offer infinite opportunities for fantastic landscape photography with everything from the beautiful wooden rowing boats & steamers to lovely jetties and wild rocky shorelines, all surrounded by the stunning Lakeland fells.
I already have several booking for the autumn. Derwent Water in particular is awesome in autumn and early winter, obviously there is the autumn colour but you also get regular valley mists at this time of year, along with the first frosts and possibly the first snow on the tops. This is my favourite period in the Lakes and is likely to be very popular so please book as early as possible to avoid disappointment.
The lakes is also a great location for a multi day workshop in which case I use this B&B (Link) which is a little family run farmhouse in Swinside, not far from Keswick & Derwent Water and with a great village inn just across the road
- Dunstanburgh Castle is a great venue up in Northumberland as there are lots of options with a couple of miles of coast to go at and plenty of space to work in. Being in an open position the castle also works at dawn & dusk throughout the year. Howick Scar/Swine Den is also close by and is a great place to escape the crowds if it gets busy. One location I wouldn't recommend in Northumberland is Bamburgh Castle. It's a stunning location but gets VERY crowded so I think it's best avoided as far as tuition goes.
