One-to-One Tuition
A NEW CONCEPT IN LANDSCAPE PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOPS. ONE-TO-ON AND VERY SMALL GROUP (of friends) TUITION AT AN AFFORDABLE PRICE AND ON A DATE OF YOUR CHOICE
I don't currently offer formal organised workshops, I might offer some in the future with very small groups but at the moment I'm focusing on One-to-One & VERY small group tuition. The reason I've taken this approach is simply that it was something I really wanted when I was starting out and again when I was making the jump from enthusiast to advanced but I couldn't find anybody that offered it. The basic idea is to tailor the tuition to your exact needs so you get the absolute maximum benefit from the day.
THIS YEAR I'M CHARGING THE FOLLOWING;
MINI WORKSHOP £80 - This is a minimum of 4-5 hours which in the summer normally runs from about 5pm until well after sunset. Because of travel times and petrol prices I normally run these in North Yorkshire but if you want to do one in the Lakes or Northumberland please do give me a shout as if I'm in the area doing another workshop or shooting a personal project I should be able to accommodate you.
FULL WORKSHOP £140 - This is an 8 hour + session that in the summer normally runs from 12 noon until about an hour after sunset. In Winter it's a full day, dawn to dusk
DUSK TO DAWN WORKSHOP £170 - Meet at 5pm shoot until well after sunset then up for dawn and run through till about 10am. Accommodation is not included in the price but I can organise this for you and options range from camping for £10 to a nice B&B for about £50
CAPTURE TO PRINT WORKSHOP £150 - In winter we go out on the morning, make some images then head back to my studio where I demonstrate every stage of processing in the digital dark room and you go home with a nice print at the end of the day. In summer we go out for an evening session than do the processing as a second session the following day.
Prices include all tuition and all transport during the workshop but do not include food & drinks or transport to or from the meeting point (unless you're staying or live locally). Also unless you request me to, perhaps to demonstrate a technique, I do not make any images of my own during the workshops. You're paying me to tutor you so you get 100% of my attention throughout the day
On all of the workshops additional people up to a maximum of 3 in total are £30 each
Personally printed Gift Vouchers are also available. You can either book a specific date & location or leave it open and the recipient can book a workshop of their choice once they receive the voucher.
With beginners the way I approach the day is to take you to a beautiful location and using my camera demonstrate every step of how I make an image, from initial location choice to building a composition, camera setup, focusing & hyperfocal distances, exposure, filtration then making the exposure and checking the histogram. I then put my camera away and we get your gear setup and you start making images (using my full Lee filter system if required) which I help you evaluate and fine-tune. The final highlight of the day is then hopefully a spectacular sunset which you capture using your new knowledge, again with help and assistance from me. My aim is to get you to a level where you can capture images right in camera that need very little processing in the digital dark room.
With more advanced photographers I follow a similar format but my aim is to help you make the jump from being able to make a visual record of a location to a level where you can express yourself artistically and capture the mood of how it felt to be there at the moment the shutter was released. We'll be looking in a lot more detail at things like the use of filters, including Neutral Density's and will discuss how exposure & shutters speed effect the mood of an image. We will also discuss pre-visualisation and how light, tides, weather, times of day & the seasons effect the landscape and how we can use these to our advantage.

Being a full time photographer I'm also flexible on dates (weekend or mid week) and in most cases can work around you. I'm also happy to do multi day trips and can organise accommodation ranging from camping to nice hotels.
